EDIFYING ED-VENTURES

DVD REVIEWED BY ZEPH

Announced back in January and hoped-for long before that, the first-ever Ed, Edd n Eddy DVD has finally arrived - oh, happy day! Edifying Ed-ventures offers 83 minutes of Ed, Edd n Eddy goodness that includes three Eds-related special features and six Ed, Edd n Eddy episodes. So was it worth the wait?

Does Rolf's Nana have a wooden leg? Of course it was worth the wait! Any Eds is good Eds, after all, and now we've got six episodes we can watch any time we like. Let's take a look at what all we get on this DVD:

OUT OF THE BOX

As you may have seen already, Edifying Ed-ventures comes in a bright green case showing the Eds' reflections in a mirrored jawbreaker. Spiffy! The jawbreaker design continues on the DVD itself, too - perfect for an EEnE DVD, but do be sure you pop it into your DVD player and not your mouth.

Menu graphics are simple yet cute, depicting the Eds and typical EEnE backgrounds much as you might expect. The main menu offers the usual range of options - you can view the episodes, change the language (your options are French, Spanish, and English), view the 'Fun Extras,' or watch a pair of CN trailers for Teen Titans and Batman.

FUN EXTRAS

In addition to an episode of The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy, there are three Eds-related extras on the DVD: Plank's Perspective, The Rules of Club Ed, and My Best Friend Plank. Eds fans will likely remember My Best Friend Plank, a uniquely moony and "retro" commercial created by Swedish animation company Filmteknara and originally aired on Cartoon Network in the summer of 2002. Easily the best of the three extras, it's hard to get tired of this clip; the song will stay with you all day and if you're lucky you won't end up with spooky Plank dreams at night. It's strange, it's silly, it's got a catchy tune - you've gotta love it!

And how about the other two extras? Created by a third-party operation called "the benson company," Plank's Perspective and The Rules of Club Ed are both approximately 3-5 minute movies consisting of voiceover narration set to clips taken from the episodes on the DVD, cobbled together with brief new introductory graphics. Plank's Perspective has Jonny giving us Plank's description of the EEnE characters (other than Nazz for some mysterious reason). Most of these descriptions are fairly standard - Eddy's bossy, Rolf's country of origin is a mystery even to Plank, etc., but there are a few surprising remarks as well (of Kevin, for instance, Jonny tells us, "He thinks he's a hot potato ... but Plank says he's just lonely." Who knew!). The second special feature, The Rules of Club Ed, sets about enlightening us to the protocol and procedures followed by every proper Ed. As with the DVD menus, "simple yet cute" rules the day for both of these extras. While no credits are provided it appears AKA's involvement was minimal, but even so Plank's Perspective and The Rules of Club Ed - while not necessarily the highlight of the DVD - should give Eds fans a chuckle and serve as a good introduction for EEnE newbies who want to know more about the show before launching into the episodes.

THE EPISODES

And now for the main event! You know 'em, you love 'em, you can't live without 'em - the erupting Eds ... episodes! Okay, so Tag Yer Ed isn't on this DVD - even so, you've got six episodes to enjoy, three from Season 1 and three from Season 2:

SEASON 1:

SIR ED-A LOT - Ed and his pals get stuck babysitting "Queen Sarah" for the day

WHO, WHAT, WHERE ED - The Eds want to barter for an egg but end up on a cross-cul-de-sac trading spree

AVAST YE EDS - The Eds' River Cruise is beset by three suspiciously familiar pirates!

SEASON 2:

KNOW -IT-ALL ED - Marshal Eddy's Canadian Squirt Gun scheme is coming up aces ... until the Kankers join in the fun

MIRROR MIRROR ON THE ED - Ed is Eddy, Eddy is Edd, and Edd is Ed. It only gets more confusing from here on in ... A true classic!

HOT-BUTTERED ED - Eddy wants his spot by the creek back from Kevin; Ed wants to be a lizard; Edd just wants some sunscreen

It may seem strange that Cartoon Network didn't stick with all Season 1 episodes for the first DVD, but this is a great selection of some very funny episodes. Veteran Eds fans and the newly-initiated alike should find a lot to laugh about here, and beyond that every episode looks great on DVD, very clean, sharp, and bright, making them even more enjoyable to watch than ever.

THE BOTTOM LINE

Edifying Ed-ventures deserves a spot in any Ed fan's collection. Sure, there are things we could hope they do differently in the future; we probably all have our own "Most Hoped-For Extra," a few more episodes per disc would be nice, and what Eds fan wouldn't love season-by-season boxed sets? No matter, this DVD is a great start and the six episodes on it are all top-notch examples of Ed, Edd n Eddy at its S1 & S2 best. They're funny, they're eminently re-watchable, and on top of that you get My Best Friend Plank and a couple of new Eds extras.

 Life is good, yes Victor?
