Questions
Q: Why don't you have full Ed, Edd n Eddy episodes
available for download? Will you ever?
No, we never will, and there a couple of reasons for this: first and
foremost, it's illegal! According to the US Copyright Office:
"Uploading or downloading works protected by copyright without the
authority of the copyright owner is an infringement of the copyright owner's
exclusive rights of reproduction and/or distribution." There are plenty of ways to rationalise
one's way around this but nothing will change the simple fact that it is against
the law. Beyond that,
we feel it's unethical to disregard copyright protection. - a.k.a. Cartoon has
put a lot of time, effort, and creativity into the Eds and this site is
intended to celebrate their work, not to steal it. And to be selfish, Cartoon
Network is moving slowly enough as it is when it comes to making Eds DVDs
available; do you think they'll go any faster if many Eds fans already have the
episodes digitally?
We could go on as there are plenty of reasons not to make the episodes
available for download here, but the long and short of it is that we never will
- it just feels, well, slimy to us and we like the Eds far too well to
do such a thing.
A:
Originally there was a small section within Edtropolis with interviews from
Jono and Mike but when we changed server we decided we wanted to expand it and
so suggested to Danny that we do a mini AKA CARTOON section. That sort of
snowballed and so in a nutshell yes, although it is ours, Animation by Mistake
is a stand-alone site in its own right (though technically it's a subdomain of
Edtropolis).
Q: So what is Animation by Mistake?
A: It's
a small website dedicated to Danny & AKA CARTOON with a naturally big
slant on Ed, Edd n Eddy. There you can read interviews with writers,
storyboarders, animators, voice artists, etc., and learn about the people
behind the Eds. The site has received Danny's full approval - hey, he even
chose the name!
Q: So what's Animation by Mistake's URL and can I link
my site to it?
A: Yes,
you certainly may link to it! Animation by Mistake lives at animationbymistake.com
If you would like to use a graphic link we have a selection of banners here.
Please note you will need to right-click and save these and then upload them
onto your own site to link to AbM.
Q: Some of the pages from the old Eddzone
aren't here any more, why not?
A: We've tried to streamline things a bit while moving over from the old
server and towards that end we've eliminated pages that seemed redundant, such
as Edd's Dreamzone page (although we've pulled some of the content from that
into Edd's bio page). In addition, you may not immediately see a particular
page in our main menu because we've reorganised the menu to include drop-downs
in some categories - mouse over any item on our menu to see what that looks
like. Overall our intent was to make everything a bit cleaner, both by getting
rid of our less visited pages and by categorising our menu but for what it's
worth, we'll be adding a lot more than we've taken away so stay tuned for
further details! =)
Q: Why are you so hot on the "family
friendly" thing?
A:
Because we want kids to be welcome here!
Ed, Edd n Eddy is, after all's said and done, a cartoon which through
its range of humour appeals to kids and adults alike. Edtropolis is a website dedicated to it as such and therefore there
will never be anything R-rated (or above) here. Heck, even the PG-13
stuff is closely monitored to keep this place as family friendly as possible.
A: Thank you for asking, but no thanks.
The truth is at least a dozen people have asked over Edtropolis' lifespan and
each time they have been turned down.
Not to be mean old sticks in the mud but let's just leave it at that -
however if you want to make your own Eds site we'll be glad to link to you ^^
Q: You
haven't updated the site in a while, why not?
A:
Well, though it may not always seem like it, we do have lives outside of
Edtropolis! Despite the fact that we get a kick out of working on the site and
its accompanying forum, there are times we have to get out and do other things
as well. Laundry, vacations, kids, school, pets, shiny objects, saving the world (again) - there are plenty of
outside forces vying for our time and attention and darn it, Edtropolis can't
always win. And even if all that's just a bunch of hooey it could be that the
host server has been having another upgrade and the whole site's been
off-limits ... who can tell? Rest assured that we've not given up on the site
and we will be back with updates when time permits so keep an eye on the Site Updates
Page to see what we're up to!
Technical
Questions
A:
Check your computer's screen resolution, Edtropolis is best viewed full-screen
at a resolution of at least 1024 x 768.
Q: Why are some pages so slow to
load?
A: As
with any website, the amount of graphical content on a page can slow the
loading time down, especially if the pictures you are trying to view are large or
you're on a dial-up connection. And sometimes run-of-the-mill "internet
issues" can slow things down - our hosting server may be busy, for
instance. Usually those things will clear up on their own within a short time,
but sometimes refreshing the page will help hurry things on a bit.
Q: I visited the site once and
couldn't get into anything, what was happening?
A: If
you couldn't get into anything, the problem was most likely with our host
(Brinkster). On occasion they perform server maintenance or encounter a problem
they need to fix and thus the sites they host become unavailable. While we will
leave a notice about this any time Brinkster lets us know beforehand,
oftentimes they do not and so we find out at the same time you do! These upgrades rarely last more than an hour
or two (a day at the most), however, so please try the site again later.
Q: I got an 'Error 404' or 'page does not
exist' message, why?
A: You
may have discovered a dead link. If
most pages are working but you can't access one or two in particular, please mail us and we'll look into it. Before doing so, though, please do check the
address again, just in case you mistyped a link into the address bar yourself.
Q: Why are some pages / sections
unavailable?
A:
Well, unless you've found a dead link as described above, they are probably
off-line because they're being worked on.
If anything is likely to be 'down' for a while, we will leave a note about it in the News / Updated sections.
Making
Your Own Eds Site
A:
Having no knowledge of HTML isn't a problem - try signing up with one of the
sites that provide FREE webhosting such as Lycos or Bravenet
(these two offer free hosting as of this writing but you can always do a web
search to find others). Many of these provide you with template-type web pages
where you can choose a format you like and then simply type in as normal - the
program does all the coding for you and you can add pictures, counters, guest
books, etc.
If
you're feeling a bit more ambitious but still don't want to code, you might
want to try a program like Microsoft FrontPage or Macromedia Dreamweaver - these
will let you create pages the way you want and will automatically provide the
HTML for you. A blog such as the ones offered for free by Xanga, Blogger, or Livejournal
can
also be a good and easy way to start an online Eds project, blogs can be excellent places for
creating spriting / icon making communities for example.
Finally,
if you want to learn how to code on your own (and what better way to learn than
just to try it?) there are any number of books and online tutorials available
to help you out, not to mention online communities with members who can nudge
you in the right direction when you need it.
Webmonkey's HTML tutorials could be a good place to start, but don't
stop there - search around and try things out until you find what you like!
A: Well of course that's up to you but there are plenty of free webhosts out there that you could use. These hosts usually put a limit on how much bandwidth / server space you can use, and will often plaster your sites with adverts, but even so they're a great way to get your site started (at least until you can tell just how much time/effort you really want put into it!). You might want to do a search on 'free web hosts' to find a current list of sites, but as of this writing the following places offer free hosting:
Bravenet.com
- Free web space plus lots of add-ons such as polls, forums,
re-direct URLs, picture storage, etc.
Tripod.com
- Free web space and many of the same features as above
Zero Catch.com
- Free space (but few / no templates; possibly for the more
advanced user)
Q: Any ideas on
what I can do with my new Ed, Edd n Eddy website?
A:
Above all, be original and do what you like! To get people coming back
to your site you need to have a unique look/feel/sound whatever. This doesn't
mean you can't cover the same ground as other sites - episode guides,
fanfiction, message boards, etc. are all common elements of fansites - but
don't forget to add your own individual touch. Take a look at the EEnE Sites
already up and running to see what's out there and then adapt these ideas to
suit you or come up with things you feel are missing - be creative! And don't
forget to nurture your site, make it grow and add fresh things from time to
time ... a 'dead' site doesn't invite return visitors.
Q: May I copy your episode
guides/bios/anything else and post them on my site?
A:
Sorry but no, you can't. Originality is what makes a site worth visiting and
besides, we've worked hard to put these pages together and would be very upset
if you simply took them. Doing so is
plagiarism, and chances are that people will recognise the original material and know
you stole it from here anyway so what's the point? If you don't have the time
or aren't interested in writing your own content then maybe you should consider
other ways to participate in EEnE fandom.
If you
MUST have an episode synopsis / bio / etc. and can't be bothered to write your
own then you then you may link to ours straight from your page, but make sure
you mail to ask first before linking
and give us credit for creating it. Edtropolis will NOT link to sites
consisting of plagiarised material.
Q: Where did you get all those
graphics and backgrounds?
A: Over
90% of the Eds pictures you see on Edtropolis have been collected by ourselves
using a image capture software (WinDVD, PowerDVD etc). These are usually downloadable & allow you take screen shots or grabs
(i.e. 'stills') from your computer's DVD via your monitor. The background manips on EDtropolis are all screen grabs
that we have modified and the remainder of pictures have been
sent in by friends or gathered from the net and used with permission wherever
possible. Some icons & smilies have come from free graphics archives. There are LOTS of free graphics available from various
clip-art/animation archive sites. Just do a search on, say, 'animated gifs'
& Bob's your uncle!
Q: Yeah, yeah, (yaaawn.). So may I copy your
graphics?
A: If you
want to use any of Edtropolis' graphics, please mail to ask first as after all's said
and done good manners cost nothing! Please don't be too greedy with what you'd
like to 'borrow' too, three or four items is fine but asking for entire
seasons or 'every pic of Rolf' as some people have done in the past is bordering on the
ridiculous. Also please remember that variety is the spice of life and to get
people coming back to your site you need to be (and look) original. Beyond
that, some of the graphics and backgrounds have taken a long time to
trim/colour/put together, and as I'm sure you can imagine it's pretty
frustrating to work for 2 hours on something and then find that someone else
has just copied it and put in on their site without so much as a by-your-leave!
It's stealing and it's rude, and most likely we'll spot you a mile off so
please - don't do it.
Q: This all sounds pretty negative!
Can't I use any of the material from Edtropolis?
A:
Negative? No not at all, we're usually quite amenable to others using
Edtropolis stuff (in moderation of course) and only get cheesed off when it's
been snitched without asking. So if you want to 'borrow' it, ask - a link back to Edtropolis and a
mention of where the material came from is usually all we ask. Remember, steal from us or any established site
at your own risk as you stand a good chance of being reported by your site host for plagiarism if you are caught.
A:
You'll have to find space to host them yourself; you cannot just link back
to Edtropolis. Such linking is stealing bandwidth from the site
and since that's something we pay for every month you can imagine that it's
going to get you unfriendly attention from us pretty fast! So in a word, DON'T
- get your own web-space instead.
Q: All right, then where CAN I host your pictures?
A:
There are many places online where you can host graphics (and sometimes other
files) for free. These sites do tend to
come and go so you're best off simply searching for one yourself, but as of
this writing the following places offer free graphics hosting:
UKDMC.com
(Zeph's current favourite!) - simple, easy, and room for lots of pictures you
can even remote link to
Photobucket.com
- Store up to 25MB of images for free
Village
Photos.com - Space to store up to 25 images (and you can remote link to
these too!)
Putfile.com
- This site lets you host images, videos, audio, and Flash files
Q: Will you please add my Ed, Edd n
Eddy website to your Links page?
A:
Sure! Email us the URL of your page
so we can check the site and add a link if it's suitable (Edtropolis will not
link to sites that contain plagiarised material, material in obvious violation
of copyright law, or sites of an R-rated nature, although in the latter case a
site may be included in exceptional circumstances and we'll post a warning along
with the link). Please also note that we prefer to link to pages that are
regularly updated, or at least have some real content (meaning a little more
than just a splash page and a menu with a bunch of "Under
Construction" pages).
A: Yes,
please do! If you'd like an Edtropolis
banner to display instead of just a typed text link you can pick from the ones
shown here.
Please note that you will need to right click and save your chosen banner and
then upload it onto your own site first before linking to us.
Q: What is Edtropolis' URL for the hotlink?
A:
http://www.edtropolis.com
Miscellaneous
Questions
Q: Who the heck are you, anyway?
A: Why, Edtropolis' operators, of course! Kit is of course the owner and originator of Edtropolis as well as its sister site, Animation by Mistake, and the Earth to Edd forum. Most of the content you find on these sites was done by her, although she's also much indebted to her good friend Zeph who not only keeps her impulsive nature reined in with the threat of sending her to the planet of the stick insects at the first sign of misbehavior, but also knows all about the 'fiddly stuff'. Without Zeph the E2E Forum would be but a pale shadow of the shiny, happy place it is today, so you may see her name and / or muddy paw prints on that and indeed on some of the other stuff around here as well.
A: The email address for queries or just generally saying 'hello' is like this. Please put something in your email subject line that will allow us to see what the mail is about - emails entitled 'hi'; 'hello'; 'my document' etc. might be mistaken for spam and deleted without opening.
While we enjoy hearing from you and will do our best to answer your
questions as time permits, please don't place us on your mailing list
nor send forwards / spam / other junk mail, we'll only delete it and may even
block your address from sending us anything else.
Q: I emailed you but you never replied! Why
not?
A:
First, if your email account uses a spam filter please be sure it's letting
emails through from our account, otherwise our response may have been bounced
back to us or ended up in your "Spam" folder and there's not much we
can do about that!
Beyond
that, though, please do be patient as sometimes it takes a while. Personal commitments, lack of free time, and
volume of mail received can all wreak havoc with the amount of time it takes
for you to get a reply. Special
requests, e.g. requests for graphics or specific information, may also take
longer for us to track down.
Regardless
of how long it takes to get a reply, please don't send repeated emails
asking what the hold-up is. The more
email we get the longer it takes to go through it all so in the long run you'll
only be delaying things further and ultimately those repeated emails get annoying
and will likely get you blacklisted!
Finally,
remember that politeness counts! Rudely
making demands or simply being downright obnoxious will not get you a response
any faster and may in fact keep you from getting a response at all.
Q: When did Edtropolis first appear?
A:
Quite a while ago, in fact! Kit posted the original Edtropolis (then called The
Ed, Edd n Eddy Zone or the Eddzone for short) back on 5th April, 1999 - about 3
weeks after the show premiered in the UK. It consisted of just one page with a
bit about the show and the 3 Eds' bios. People said they liked it, she got
hooked and it just sort of snowballed from there!
Q: This place used to be called The Eddzone.
Why the name and URL change?
A: When The Eddzone's hosting contract with
Lycos expired, it seemed like a good time to change more than just the host.
The site's overall "look and feel" has been changed, existing pages
(such as the bio pages) have been updated, new pages are being added and to go
along with all of this it seemed like a new name was in order, too. Hey, we all
need a little change every now and then! The new name of Edtropolis of course
comes from the amazing cardboard city the Eds made in Season 2's 'Urban Ed;' we
felt it neatly summed up all we're trying to say and do here with the site.
Q: Does AKA CARTOON know about your site?
A: Of course! It has Danny
Antonucci's approval, and lots of folks from AKA have even taken the time to
send us their Feedback. (Plus, we've been lucky enough to visit AKA's studios in Vancouver many times ourselves too & witness the insanity first hand!)
Q: I
see a link on Edtropolis to your message board, Earth to Edd; what is that all
about?
A: At the risk of stating the obvious, Earth to Edd is Edtropolis' official message board. Its administrators are the same people who work on Edtropolis - Flame of the West (Kit) and ZephyrSamba, and along with a select group of moderators we all work to ensure our members have a friendly environment in which to discuss the Eds, share their Eds artwork, or just play a game of That's My Horse or Caption That Screenshot. We're happy to say there is a real sense of community on E2E and our members range from ages 12 up to people in their 40s who all get along well. If anyone has questions about the board (parents especially) feel free to get in touch
If you're an Eds fan aged 12 or over and you've not yet joined, what are you waiting for?
Q. Are there any
restrictions on who may join Earth to Edd?
A: Although you don't have to join Earth to Edd to
simply view messages, you must register for an account in order to post and
yes, we do have a few restrictions on who may do so. First, you need to be at
least twelve before you can join, this is for your safety as much as anything
else so if you're not yet twelve please do hang on for a little bit!
Additionally, each member may only have one account; if we suspect you have
multiple accounts we will get in touch and may even merge / delete your
accounts. Finally, by registering to join Earth to Edd you've agreed to abide
by all the rules laid out in our Rules and Regulations (which you can access
via the FAQ link over at Earth to Edd). Most of these rules are pretty
straightforward and all are geared towards keeping Earth to Edd running
smoothly and pleasantly for everyone but if you have questions about any of
them please let us know.
Q: Why do I need to register / be approved to join
Earth to Edd, Edtropolis's message board?
A: So that we can keep an eye on who's using it, of course!
The Internet can be a strange and dangerous place and message boards are
notorious places for attracting the type of idiots who like nothing better than
trying to upset or provoke other people - something we can all do without. As
such we want to limit posts to only those people who have signed up and given
us a valid email address. Of course we always hope we won't have problems with
any of our members, but at least this way when problems do arise we can limit
that member's ability to post or even ban them altogether if the situation is
severe enough.
